In 1689 the English Army changed its role and direction. A coercive, political force under James II, it was now purged of suspect personnel, rapidly augmented and entered a major European war for the first time in nearly a century. The political and social system was unable to cope, and the resulting tensions between the Army and the political establishment became key features of William III.
